Falkenberg, a charming coastal town in Sweden, has experienced an impressive growth as a tourist destination. Between 2010 and 2023, the number of commercial guest nights in Falkenberg increased by a staggering 89%, showcasing the town’s rising popularity among visitors.
Key Highlights

Kristján Fannar, destination developer at Destination Falkenberg, commented: “The curve dropped sharply during the refugee crisis and the pandemic, but now we have not only regained the level from 2019 but are a bit above it.”
Comparison with Neighboring Municipalities
Falkenberg’s growth outpaces its neighbors significantly:
- Falkenberg: 89.36% increase
- Varberg: 8.19% increase
- Halmstad: 19.13% increase
- Low season (September-May): 109.4% increase

Seasonal Variations
While Falkenberg remains primarily a summer destination, with half of the annual guest nights occurring during summer, the low season has shown remarkable growth:
Kristján Fannar emphasized the importance of this trend: “We are working for Falkenberg to grow sustainably, and it is a key factor to get more visitors from September to May. Not only because there is accommodation capacity, but for more companies in the tourism industry to be able to develop, grow and retain staff.”
International Visitors
While domestic tourists dominate, accounting for 90.66% of guest nights in 2023, international guest nights have grown by 79.93% since 2010.
Accommodation Types
Different accommodation types have shown varied growth rates:
Kristján Fannar noted: “It is impressive to see the overall development and that the number of guest nights during July has increased by a full 91,000, or 65%, during the period 2010-2023. But what stands out a little extra is the development of almost 200% of guest nights during December to March during the period 2010-2023.”
