Record Number of Christmas Activities in the Umeå Region
The Umeå region’s tourism industry is inviting visitors to a diverse and record-breaking celebration this holiday season, featuring everything from Christmas markets and delicious holiday meals to atmospheric concerts. Here are some of this year’s highlights:
More Markets Than Ever Before
The Christmas market season kicks off on November 24th at Slöjdarnas Hus in Vännäsby and continues with about 20 markets until the third Sunday of Advent. A new addition this year is the Christmas market at Umåker on December 7-8, where visitors can experience a mix of crafts, delicacies, and activities. The trotting school will hold an open house with children’s activities, including pony rides. Buses will run between Umeå center and Umåker, making it easy to get there.
“We want to create a genuine and cozy experience where everyone in the family feels welcome,” says Pernilla Asplund, project manager for the Christmas market at Umåker.
Christmas Flavors: From Classics to Modern Favorites
Christmas buffets remain a central part of the holiday celebration, and the Umeå region offers a wide range of unique taste experiences. Sävargården serves a traditional Christmas buffet with local ingredients and sustainable choices in a historic setting. For vegetarian and vegan options, Presteles Trädgårdscafé sets up a green Christmas buffet, while Granö Beckasin offers a five-course Christmas dinner in a scenic environment. Wild River, which debuted in new premises this year, offers a seated buffet in three servings where classic flavors get a modern twist.
“The content will be what we think should be on a Christmas buffet, but in our way and of course made from scratch – like whiskey herring, frozen bear meat, and rice à la malta panna cotta. Classically unclassical, just the way we like to do things!” says Freddy Holmgren, head chef and owner of Wild River.
Christmas Experiences in Umeå Center
Umeå center becomes a gathering place for Christmas activities for all ages, with everything from Santa disco and Santa Run to outdoor cinema and gift hunts. New this year is the celebration of the first Sunday of Advent with a Christmas tree lighting and official Christmas speech at the Town Hall Square, followed by an outdoor screening of a Christmas movie.
“We want to create more reasons to visit Umeå center and spread Christmas joy in the winter darkness,” says Elin Jonsson, center developer at Visit Umeå.
Concerts and Culture to Boost the Christmas Spirit
For those seeking music and entertainment, there is a wide range of Christmas concerts, from gospel and jazz to Irish musicals. For something different, stand-up comedy with Måns Möller is also on offer.
