Festive Fun: Umeå City Center’s Spectacular Christmas and New Year’s Activities

Both Umeå residents and visiting tourists can look forward to a packed December in Umeå city center. The event calendar offers everything from Christmas tree lighting and Santa discos to outdoor movie screenings and New Year’s fireworks.

Exciting New Additions This Year

This year brings a special first advent celebration at Rådhustorget in central Umeå, featuring a Christmas tree lighting ceremony with speeches and entertainment. This collaborative event involves Umeå Municipality, Culture Department, and Parks and Streets division. Following the ceremony, an outdoor movie screening of Christmas films will delight film enthusiasts of all ages.

“With our activities, we want to create more reasons to visit Umeå city center in December. We hope to spread some holiday cheer in the winter darkness,” says Elin Jonsson, center development professional at Visit Umeå.

The Christmas events will conclude on December 21st with an outdoor movie screening for families, last-minute shoppers, and returning locals.

New Year’s Celebrations

After Christmas, restaurants and hotels will offer various New Year’s packages. Early birds can secure the best spots to watch fireworks, which are most spectacular from the pier, Skeppsbron, Rådhus Park, or Årstidernas Park.

“It’s always fun to organize this every year. It’s a pleasant way for Umeå residents to celebrate the new year, and I take the task very seriously,” says Martin Uddestrand, who has managed the New Year’s fireworks for 22 consecutive years.
