Swedish Women’s Handball Team to Start Next Season in Eskilstuna and Gävle
The Swedish women’s handball team is set to kick off their next season with matches against Spain in Eskilstuna on October 24 and Gävle on October 26. This autumn gathering will be crucial for their preparations ahead of the upcoming European Championship.
“A very good opponent for us in our European Championship preparations, and we are happy to play two new international matches in front of our home crowd,” says national team coach Tomas Axnér.
The team will be based in Gävle during the national team week in autumn, marking the first women’s international match in Gästrikland since 1979. Kristin Thorleifsdóttir, a team representative, expressed excitement about the venues:
“We have had fantastic matches in front of packed stands in Eskilstuna in recent years, and it will be fun to come there and to Gävle where we haven’t been before. We love coming to new places and giving more people the opportunity to see the national team live.”
Local Enthusiasm
Local representatives in both Gävle and Eskilstuna are eagerly anticipating hosting the national team. Helene Börjesson, chair of the culture and leisure committee in Gävle municipality, highlighted the potential for handball growth in the region:
“Handball in Gävle has had an exciting new start thanks to committed enthusiasts, and it is a sport with good potential to grow in our district. Handball is a strong spectator sport, and it is incredibly gratifying that an international match will be played in Gavlehovshallen!”
In Eskilstuna, which has previously hosted international matches, there’s equal enthusiasm. Björn Frössevi, chairman of Eskilstuna Guif, stated:
“We are proud to be involved in organizing another international match together with the Handball National Team and Destination Eskilstuna. We hope that the women’s team meeting a top team like Spain will help increase interest in handball in the region even more and be an inspiration for all our young people in the club.”

The women’s team is preparing for two major tournaments:
- The Olympics in Paris and Lille from July 25 to August 10
