Continued Growth in Eskilstuna’s Tourism Industry in 2024
According to new statistics from Tillväxtverket, Eskilstuna is experiencing continued growth in its local tourism sector during 2024. A total of 324,716 guest nights were registered, representing a 0.3% increase compared to 2023. This growth is a result of the city’s ongoing efforts to attract both domestic and international visitors.
Strong Performance in Swedish and International Tourism
Swedish guest nights showed a positive development with a 3.6% increase, equating to 293,376 guest nights. International visitors’ interest in Eskilstuna continues to grow, with a 6.7% increase in foreign guest nights, totaling 29,602 overnight stays.
Growing Markets – Especially Germany, Norway, and the Netherlands
One of the most striking trends is the significant increase in German visitors. The number of German guest nights has skyrocketed with an impressive 161% growth, from 2,618 in 2023 to 6,828 in 2024. Guest nights from Norway and the Netherlands have also nearly doubled.
“It is gratifying to see our international visitors returning to Eskilstuna after the pandemic. Through our focus on the German market and three years of participation in the world’s largest boat show, Boot, we have increased awareness of the possibility of traveling here via waterways,” says David Hofmann, CEO of Destination Eskilstuna.
Strong Growth in Camping
Camping continues to be a favorite among visitors, with an impressive 51.7% increase compared to 2023. This indicates a growing interest in nature-based and flexible accommodation options. The hotel market remains stable but challenged, showing a 6.3% decline in guest nights. Despite this, Eskilstuna has maintained its position as an attractive destination for both business and leisure travelers.
A Bright Future Ahead
Eskilstuna’s efforts to increase foreign visitors have yielded results. The destination sees positive development in its nearby markets, with significant increases from Germany, Norway, and the Netherlands. The strategy of attracting visitors who stay longer, combined with recruiting national and international meetings and events, and developing thematic travel reasons focusing on nature, culture, and culinary experiences, positions Eskilstuna well to continue growing as an attractive destination for both Swedish and international visitors.
