Krakow’s Nativity Scenes: A Shimmering Winter Exhibition at Kalmar Castle
This winter, Kalmar Castle will offer a deluxe Christmas atmosphere with a unique exhibition showcasing approximately thirty vibrant nativity scenes from Krakow. The exhibition, titled “Krakow’s Nativity Scenes – A Shimmering Winter Exhibition”, will be open from December 12, 2024, to February 23, 2025.
A Unique Cultural Heritage
Nowhere else in the world will you find nativity scenes quite like those from the city of Krakow in southern Poland. These extraordinary creations are distinguished by their splendor and creative joy, with their unique form inspired by the city’s architecture, cultural history, and daily life.
“The scenes feature ecclesiastical and secular figures side by side, often including figures and events that cannot be easily explained. Tradition dictates that the viewer should use their imagination and guess what the scene wants to tell,” explains the exhibition description.
UNESCO Recognized Cultural Heritage
Since 2018, Krakow’s unique nativity scenes have been listed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list. The upcoming exhibition at Kalmar Castle will feature approximately thirty nativity scenes from the Historical Museum in Krakow, varying in size from miniatures to large-scale representations.
