Kattegattleden Gets Safer with New Stretch Opening on June 3rd
Kattegattleden, the popular cycling route along Sweden’s west coast, is set to become even more appealing and safer for cyclists. A new 9-kilometer car-free cycling path between Morup and Ås will be officially opened on Saturday, June 3rd at 11:00 AM.
The inauguration will take place along road 768, at the turn-off to First Camp Björkäng. Visitors are invited to test ride the new path between 10 AM and 12 PM, with representatives from Region Halland, Falkenberg Municipality, Varberg Municipality, and the Swedish Transport Administration on site.
Improved Safety and Accessibility
The construction of this new stretch, which began in 2015, aims to enhance accessibility and safety for cyclists and pedestrians. Andreas Jansson from the Swedish Transport Administration explains:
“Between Morup and Ås, there were previously no safe options for unprotected road users along the relatively busy road 768. The construction of the new pedestrian and cycle path includes widening the existing road and creating a separate path that includes two bridges, one cast-in-place concrete bridge and one wooden bridge.”
Boosting Cycle Tourism
This development is expected to attract more visitors and strengthen cycle tourism in the region. Helene Andersson, Chair of Region Halland’s Growth Committee, states:
“By expanding and developing cycle routes in the region, we are contributing to improving the quality of life in both rural and urban areas, making Halland more attractive to both residents and visitors. Kattegattleden and other cycle routes in Halland contribute to increased movement and thus public health for those living along the route. It also provides opportunities for more people to go on cycling holidays, which in turn benefits the Halland business community along the routes.”
Local Benefits
The new path is not only beneficial for tourists but also for local residents. Åke Jonsson, a Morup resident, shares his enthusiasm:
“It feels fantastic to have a new pedestrian and cycle path where you can now lift your gaze, look around and enjoy the coastal meadows, flowering ditches, and the sea. The fact that cyclists and pedestrians now have their own separate road makes the experience both safer and more enjoyable.”
The first 50 people to arrive by bicycle and test the new cycle path on Saturday, June 3rd between 10 AM and 12 PM will receive a goodie bag. There will also be a chance to win a bicycle with a matching helmet from Cycleurope Sverige AB.
This development marks another step in making Kattegattleden one of Sweden’s premier cycling destinations, combining safety, natural beauty, and local charm.
