Smart Collaboration Solves Critical Needs for Future Tourism in Southern Sweden

The BI Syd network, consisting of nine regions in southern Sweden, is taking a major step forward in data-driven tourism analysis. This is happening thanks to the introduction of an advanced platform for consumption and mobility data. This strategic milestone means that BI Syd can optimize efforts towards the tourism industry and help municipalities and regions set ambitious goals and make the right investments in the visitor economy.

The tourism industry contributes to growth and jobs, attractiveness, local pride, better services and communications. According to a survey by the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions (SKR), the industry is high on the agenda of municipalities and regions.

Meeting the Need for Local Statistics

A very high proportion of municipalities (76 percent) need statistics and knowledge about place development, according to SKR’s survey. This is also a need that emerges in international contexts. However, until now, there has been a lack of official national statistics that can be broken down to the local level, except for guest nights.

BI Syd’s initiative will contribute reliable and up-to-date statistics that provide the basis for making local economic analyses and decisions. This makes it possible to set goals for the future and invest in the tourism industry in a sustainable way to a greater extent.

    Symphony: A Game-Changing Data Platform

In 2023, BI Syd began the procurement of a data platform focused on tourism analysis, a mobility data service aimed at improving understanding of visitor behavior in Sweden. Thanks to the Symphony data platform, BI Syd’s analysts can now conduct high-quality and long-term analyses.

“The introduction of Symphony is a turning point for us within BI Syd. The new data platform strengthens our capacity to deliver in-depth knowledge about visitor behavior and contributes to our mission to promote sustainable and attractive tourism development,”

says Sara Brynskog, BI manager at Visit Skåne AB.

    Supporting Sustainable Tourism Development

With the help of the platform, BI Syd will be able to support:

    • The development of measures to geographically and temporally balance visitor flows.
    • Marketing of destinations in a socially, economically and sustainable manner.
    • Dissemination of knowledge and analyses to partners at municipal, regional and national levels.

    About BI Syd

BI Syd is a network of regions in southern Sweden formed in 2015 with the goal of systematically gathering environmental monitoring and ensuring robust decision-making support for the tourism industry. Through collaboration and innovation, BI Syd strives to promote a responsible and successful tourism sector.
