Record Number of Young Nature Guides in Halland This Summer

For the third consecutive year, Visit Halland’s successful project involving young nature guides is kicking off. This year, a record number of youth have been employed, with 28 nature guides stationed across Kungsbacka, Varberg, Halmstad, Hylte, and Laholm.

“It feels great that the project has grown and that we now have almost 30 young people who will be ambassadors and take care of both visitors and nature this summer,” says Jeanette Bengtsson, project manager for Halland’s nature guides.

The nature guides initiative is part of Region Halland’s sustainability efforts. Launched in 2022, the project aims to develop sustainable nature tourism. Each municipality has a team of 4-6 youth who receive comprehensive training in CPR, hospitality, sustainability, and the Right of Public Access (Allemansrätten). They also use the “A day in Halland” app to provide visitors with tips on attractions and sights.

    Preserving Halland’s Natural Beauty

In addition to interacting with visitors, a crucial task for the nature guides is to keep Halland’s nature reserves, beaches, and trails clean. They also ensure signs are in place, footbridges are intact, and help combat invasive species like Yellow Skunk Cabbage and Canadian Goldenrod.

“The nature guides project is truly a win-win: nature is left cleaner, the experience becomes more enjoyable for both visitors and locals, and we have the opportunity to give a whole group of young people their first summer job,” explains Jeanette Bengtsson.

New This Year: Together Day on August 7

A new addition this year is the “Together Day” (Tillsammansdagen). On August 7, nature guides, Visit Halland, and the County Administrative Board of Halland invite the public to become nature heroes. Everyone is welcome to join the nature guides in combating invasive species, particularly Yellow Skunk Cabbage in Simlångsdalen outside Halmstad.
