Sweden’s Oldest Knight Society to Attend Tournament at Kalmar Castle
From September 13-15, Kalmar Castle will host its inaugural Tournament, featuring Sweden’s oldest and most renowned knight society. Visitors can expect a medieval market and family-friendly activities alongside thrilling jousting matches.
For three days, guests will be transported back in time to an era of knights, adventures, and exciting tournaments. These events originated in the medieval period as opportunities for knights to hone and showcase their equestrian and lance skills. Tournaments were also held at Kalmar Castle during the Vasa kings’ reign, a fact that will be highlighted during the event.
Torneamentum: Sweden’s Premier Knight Society
The knight society Torneamentum, which has its roots in Medieval Week on Gotland where they have participated in tournaments and parades since 1986, will perform four shows on the sea plain near Kalmar Castle. Visitors will witness exhilarating jousting matches featuring mounted knights.
Erik Böhme Graneskog of Torneamentum states: “We in Torneamentum are proud and happy to do this together with Kalmar Castle. It is a magical place and it will be really fun.”
Medieval Market and Family Activities
The entire castle area will be buzzing with activity throughout the weekend. Inside the castle, visitors who purchase entry tickets can explore the regular exhibitions and listen to a presentation titled “From War to Carousels” about the history of tournaments.
A medieval market will be held in the outer courtyard, with free entry on Saturday and Sunday. Visitors can find historical crafts, felted wool crafts, beeswax candles, handmade jewelry, candy, and more. Family-friendly activities include pony riding, fencing, and archery. Children can also engage in crafts, listen to stories, ride hobby horses, and meet the castle’s knights, princesses, and jesters.
