New Hiking Trail Killingarundan Unveiled in Skövde
Skövde, a picturesque town in Sweden, has added another jewel to its crown of outdoor attractions. The new hiking trail, Killingarundan, offers visitors a unique insight into the significance of the Billingen plateau mountain for human history and development.
Set to be inaugurated on October 16th at 4 PM at the barbecue area in Fårhagen, Killingarundan takes hikers on a journey around an active quarry, through older mining areas, and along the old railway embankment to Varnhem.
“During the pandemic years, there was significant wear and tear on the existing hiking trails on Billingen. The idea was then born to create new trails to spread visitors to Billingen’s southern slope, inspired by the Trollstigarna that Next Skövde had previously developed on Billingen. Killingarundan is accessible to both Skövde residents and visitors. It’s of moderate length and easy to reach by bike and bus as it starts in an urban environment,”
says Lotta Stigsdotter, destination developer for Billingen, Next Skövde.
Two Trails to Explore
Killingarundan consists of two circular trails:
- A 2-kilometer trail through Fårhagen, showcasing the limestone quarrying for cement production from the 1950s
- A 5-kilometer trail circling the active quarry, passing through Skogslund, an abandoned garden in the forest
Both trails offer informative signs about the locations and nature, and there’s a barbecue area with a view over the quarry.
Collaboration and Future Plans
The trails were developed in collaboration with Heidelberg Materials (formerly Cementa), who are active in the area. Marie Apelgren from Heidelberg Materials expressed excitement about the joint project and the upcoming inauguration.
Future plans include the addition of another trail on southern Billingen – Getaloven, spanning 13 km.
Inauguration Details
The inauguration will take place on October 16th at 4 PM at the barbecue area in Fårhagen. Representatives from Next Skövde and Heidelberg Materials will be present to provide more information about the new hiking trail and its attractions.
