Skellefteå Invests in Large-Scale Art: New Mural Becomes a Focal Point in City Center
Visit Skellefteå, in collaboration with Diös, is presenting a major investment in public art in the city center. A large facade painting in the heart of the city will become a new visual landmark and part of Skellefteå’s journey to becoming the City Center of the Year 2026.
Strategic Art Placement
This spring, one of Skellefteå’s most visible facades will be transformed into a gigantic artwork. The new mural, located on Kanalgatan above H&M and Tatung, is a collaboration between Visit Skellefteå and property owner Diös. The artwork will also be part of the international art festival Wallstreet, coming to Skellefteå in summer 2025.
“Above all, this is a long-term investment in a more vibrant city center. Public art strengthens competitiveness, adds uniqueness, contributes to innovation power and new perspectives – while inviting conversation and debate,” says Maria Broman, CEO of Visit Skellefteå.
Strategic Significance
The artwork’s placement is strategic. The painting will be clearly visible from Sara Cultural Center, The Wood Hotel, and Sara Square, and will be an attractive focal point when approaching the city center from a future transportation hub.
“Visit Skellefteå’s mission is to put Skellefteå on the map as a destination, establishment, and residential area. The investment in a large mural is another contribution to that work,” says Sara Keisu-Lundh, Chair of the Board at Visit Skellefteå.
What is a Mural?
A mural is a large artwork painted directly on a wall or facade in public space. The purpose is often to create life, identity, and character in the urban environment – while making art accessible to everyone.
About the Wallstreet Festival
Wallstreet is an international art festival focusing on public art. The festival brings together artists from around the world to create permanent works in public spaces and conduct workshops, discussions, and activities that engage residents and visitors. Skellefteå is one of the host cities in 2025.
City Center of the Year
The City Center of the Year award is presented annually by the Swedish City Centers organization to the city that has successfully developed its city center. The focus is on collaboration between public and private actors, place development, creativity, and long-term sustainability. Skellefteå aims to win the title in 2026.
