Physics Talents to Compete in Lund Next Summer
Next summer, high school physics students from around the world will experience a unique opportunity in Sweden. The International Young Physicists’ Tournament (IYPT) will take place in Lund from June 29 to July 6, 2025, welcoming participants from approximately forty different countries.
A Global Physics Competition for Young Talents
IYPT is an annual international competition for high school students that offers an extraordinary platform for young physicists to showcase their research and problem-solving skills.
“IYPT is a unique opportunity for high school students to work with physics and present their results in an international environment. By hosting the IYPT final in Lund, we hope to inspire participants towards higher studies and careers in physics and natural sciences in Sweden and Skåne,” says Sam Edgecombe, chairman of IYPT Sweden.
How the Competition Works
The tournament involves a fascinating process where:
- 17 theoretical and experimental problems are published one year in advance
- Students conduct experiments and research to solve complex physics challenges
- Participants compete by presenting solutions and challenging each other’s research
- An international jury of physicists evaluates their performances
International Significance
Over 400 participants from diverse countries including Australia, Uganda, Brazil, and Canada are expected to attend. The event aims to promote science education, encourage creativity, and foster international understanding.
“The purpose of organizing IYPT 2025 in Lund is to showcase Sweden as a knowledge nation, promote natural science education, particularly physics, encourage creativity and independence among youth, and simultaneously work to increase international understanding and cooperation,” explains Sam Edgecombe.
Local Support and Vision
The tournament is supported by Visit Skåne and Lund Municipality’s event fund. It will be hosted at the Medical Faculty and Physics Department of Lund University, with one competition hall open to the public.
“It’s fantastic that Lund will be the place where the world’s top young physics talents compete in a world championship. A practical example of how Lund contributes to the future through knowledge, innovation, and openness,” says Anders Almgren, Chairman of the Municipal Executive Board in Lund.
Call for Sponsors and Volunteers
IYPT is seeking companies interested in sponsoring the event and volunteers – teachers and students passionate about physics – to help during IYPT 2025.
