Swedish Women’s Handball Team Prepares for European Championship with Match Against Poland in Lund
On November 20th, the Swedish women’s handball team will gather in Lund to prepare for the upcoming European Championship in Hungary. As part of their preparations, they will play two matches against Poland – one in Ystad on November 23rd and another in Lund on November 24th. Tickets for these matches will be released next week.
National team coach Tomas Axnér states, “We always strive to prepare on home turf and have fond memories from previous gatherings and matches in both Lund and Ystad.”
Return to Lund for Coach Axnér
This autumn’s setup mirrors that of 2020 when Axnér first took charge of the team. It marks a return to Lund for Axnér, who moved from the city this summer to lead the Danish club Team Esbjerg, while maintaining his role as Sweden’s national coach.
Building on Recent Successes
Reflecting on recent achievements, Axnér commented, “Last season was long and eventful, with both the World Cup on home soil and the Olympics in France. It hurts that we didn’t manage to secure a medal, but it’s something we’ll continue to aim for. We’ve shown in recent years that we’ve taken steps forward and can pressure and even beat the very best.”
European Championship Schedule
The team will gather in Lund on November 20th before traveling to Debrecen, Hungary on November 26th. Their first European Championship match against North Macedonia is scheduled for November 28th. Subsequent group matches will be against host nation Hungary and Turkey.
Lund Welcomes the National Team
Samuel Jonsson (M), Vice Chairman of the Culture and Leisure Committee and Chairman of Visit Lund, expressed the city’s enthusiasm: “We are a city with a long handball history and love hosting national teams, whether women’s or men’s, seniors or youth. We are very proud that the women’s team is now coming to Sweden’s undisputed handball capital to live, train, and play a national match during their preparation for the European Championship. We believe it will be a success for both the national team and for the sports city of Lund.”
The match in Lund is partially supported by Lund Municipality’s event fund. Tickets for Sweden’s matches against Poland in Ystad Arena on November 23rd and Sparbanken Skåne Arena in Lund on November 24th will be released via Handbollslandslaget.se/biljetter on September 26th.
