Kalmar and Karlskrona Aim to Put Sweden on the International Cycling Map
Kalmar and Karlskrona are joining forces with the Swedish Cycling Federation to revive the spirit of the renowned Postgirot Open cycling race. The two destinations have signed a letter of intent to create a new international cycling event called Tour of Sweden, set to run from 2026 to 2029.
Bringing Back the Glory of Swedish Cycling
It’s been over 20 years since the last Postgirot Open, a race that attracted international cycling elite and global attention. Now, Kalmar and Karlskrona are determined to put Swedish cycling back on the world stage.
Johan Persson (S), Chairman of the Municipal Board in Kalmar, states: “Cycling is one of the biggest sports, followed by a dedicated audience worldwide. If we can recreate the public celebration from Postgirot Open in Kalmar and Karlskrona with Tour of Sweden, it will be positive for our residents, our businesses, and for cycling in Sweden.”
A Boost for Regional Tourism
Emma Swahn Nilsson (M), Chairman of the Municipal Board in Karlskrona, adds: “It’s exciting that we, together with Kalmar and the Swedish Cycling Federation, are participating in this exciting venture. Through the competition, we will have the opportunity to showcase the fantastic southeast region to a broad target group in northern and central Europe.”
Collaboration is Key
Fredrik Kessiakoff from the Swedish Cycling Federation emphasizes the need for collaboration: “These types of larger events are naturally demanding in terms of organization, volunteer work, and other resources. We will therefore want to link arms with businesses and organizations that want to contribute to realizing the vision and see the benefit of the great exposure that the initiative has the opportunity to create.”
Next Steps
In May 2025, the partners will submit an application to the International Cycling Federation to organize the Tour of Sweden. Until then, they will work together to create the necessary economic conditions for the event.
