10 Autumn Tips in Kalmar 2024
Kalmar offers plenty to experience year-round. Here are some things we’re looking forward to this autumn:
1. Visit Museums and Art Galleries
Kalmar has numerous exhibitions to explore, both at major attractions and smaller art galleries. Don’t miss the new “Borgarnas ö” exhibit at Kalmar County Museum and the “HÄXOR” (Witches) exhibition at Kalmar Castle, on display until November 3rd. Also check out the fascinating exhibition about the Kronan warship.
2. Stroll Through Historic Quarters
Feel the wings of history in Kvarnholmen, Kalmar’s city center. Take a walk along the city wall for a bird’s-eye view. Wander the alleys of Old Town to see beautiful 18th and 19th century houses.
3. Delightful Culinary Experiences
Kalmar boasts many cozy cafes and restaurants, several mentioned in the White Guide. Want to explore multiple restaurants in one evening? Check out Matnatten on October 18th.
4. Tour Farm Shops and Country Cafes
During harvest season, visit local farm shops and enjoy seasonal delicacies. The Matrunda Kalmar län food tour takes place September 14-15. Also explore the autumn market at Skälby on September 29th and harvest day at Krusenstiernska gården on October 5th.
5. Spooky Walks and Events
Autumn brings several eerie guided walks in the city center and Kalmar Castle. Listen to exciting audio stories about Kalmar’s history. On October 19th, there’s even a horror run premiere!
6. Music, Comedy and Theater
Enjoy performances at various venues around Kalmar. The Ljus på kultur festival coincides with autumn break. Artists like Albin Lee Meldau, Ellen Krauss, Danny Saucedo, Christer Sjögren and Nanne Grönvall will visit Kalmar this fall. You can also experience stand-up comedy with Al Pitcher, the ballet masterpiece Swan Lake, or a new play by author Tove Folkesson.
7. Various Events
Kalmar offers running events throughout much of the year, plus Allsvenskan football and Swedish Superleague floorball. In September, experience grand jousting tournaments with knights on horseback or join Kalmar’s colorful Pride parade.

Take a self-guided city walk through Kalmar’s beautiful parks, with several routes to choose from.

Visit scenic natural areas in and around Kalmar. Consider a cycling excursion, a round of golf, or if you’re daring, climb among the treetops on a high ropes course.
