Kalmar Castle: The Most Visited Destination in Kalmar County
Kalmar Castle and the Öland Bridge are what most people immediately think of when asked about Kalmar. A recent study by Region Kalmar County reveals that Kalmar Castle is indeed the most visited tourist destination in the region.
A Comprehensive Survey of Regional Tourism
Every four years, Region Kalmar County conducts a comprehensive survey to understand what Swedish people know about the county and which places they have visited. The latest research shows that Kalmar has significantly improved its position, becoming the most visited place by Swedes, closely followed by Öland, which remains the county’s most well-known location.
Kalmar Castle: A Tourism Highlight
Kalmar Castle stands out as the most visited attraction in the region. It ranks among the top-known destinations, alongside Astrid Lindgren’s World, Solliden, and Borgholm Castle.
“It is fantastically exciting and confirms that our investments together with the National Property Board are yielding results. We have spent many years focusing on developing the castle into an attractive year-round destination with first-class exhibitions and popular family activities,” says Sylvia Nylin, CEO of Destination Kalmar.
What Visitors Say About Kalmar
The “Travel in Sweden 2024” study, which examines Swedish travel habits and visitor satisfaction, consistently gives Kalmar excellent ratings. The destination receives particularly high marks for accommodation options, museums/exhibitions, hospitality, and architecture.
Visitors predominantly describe Kalmar using words like “historical”, “beautiful”, “cozy”, and “welcoming”.
“Kalmar has several attractive destinations and events, but regardless of what visitors come to experience, our beautiful coastal location and historical background give the visit an extra dimension. Here, you can walk among well-preserved historical buildings and see exhibitions about everything from our 800-year-old castle to the Royal Ship Kronan. This gives Kalmar its unique atmosphere that cannot be replicated,” explains Sylvia Nylin.
