Jönköping Theater Celebrates 120 Years with Packed Jubilee Program
This year, Jönköping Theater celebrates its 120th anniversary with a program filled with historical lectures, film screenings, ghost walks, and guided tours. The highlight of the celebration is a grand jubilee performance featuring Sofia Dalén, Moreau, and others.
Throughout the year, various events have been offered to celebrate the theater’s 120 years, from lectures on its history to guided walks. The aim has been to make the theater even more accessible to Jönköping residents and visitors while celebrating this significant milestone.
“It feels fantastic to celebrate the theater’s 120 years with a program that reflects both history and the present. We want to invite the audience to share this journey with us and take part in the theater’s rich cultural heritage,” says Josefin Stenfeldt, project manager for the jubilee.
As the crowning jewel of the jubilee program, the theater is hosting a grand anniversary performance on October 19th. Local-born Sofia Dalén will act as host, and the audience will enjoy a historical retrospective by Nils Hjort, as well as musical entertainment from local favorites Trapptoner and the nationally renowned Gränna band Moreau.
Jönköping’s Liveliest 120-Year-Old
Since its inauguration on December 2, 1904, Jönköping Theater has stood as a landmark for performing arts in the region. Designed by city architect August Atterström, the building still inspires admiration with its neoclassical style and rich history. Over the years, it has evolved from a pure theater stage to also serving as a cinema for much of the 20th century. Today, it’s a vibrant venue for music, stand-up, opera, theater, and dance, hosting around 100 performances annually.
Since Destination Jönköping took over operations in 2014, the theater has undergone an exciting development with a wide range of events, welcoming both local talents and international stars to its stage.
“Jönköping Theater is an important part of the city’s cultural offerings and a meeting place for different generations. It’s an honor to be part of the theater’s history, present, and future. Jönköping Theater is not just a building, but a cultural heritage and a place where performing arts have created memories and touched people for over a century. The 120th anniversary is an opportunity to celebrate all that the theater has been and still is – a living stage that inspires and engages,” says Lena Stävmo, CEO of Destination Jönköping.
