Egyptian Mummies Exhibition: A Journey to Immortality Opens at Kalmar Castle
Preparations are in full swing for the next major exhibition at Kalmar Castle. On April 18th, “Egyptian Mummies – A Journey to Immortality” will open, featuring artifacts from the Egyptian collection of the Florence Archaeological Museum. Some of the items are 4,000 years old and will be displayed in Sweden for the first time.
The Fascinating World of Mummification
Mummification is a subject that has long captivated human imagination, often portrayed in books and films with elements of mystery and horror. In reality, ancient Egyptians viewed mummification as a profound spiritual process reflecting their deep belief that death was not the end, but the beginning of a journey to eternal life.
“The exhibition explores questions many of us have: ‘What happens in the afterlife?’ and ‘What is the meaning of life?’ In today’s society, we talk about uploading consciousness or freezing our bodies to achieve immortality. Mummification shows us how these thoughts were addressed in ancient Egypt,” says Meg Nömgård, Castle Director of Kalmar Castle.
What Visitors Can Expect
The exhibition will provide insights into mummification and the embalming methods used in ancient Egypt. Visitors will see:
- Burial artifacts and personal belongings
- Sarcophagi
- Busts and funeral masks
- A mumified woman
- A mumified child
- A mumified dog
Expert Collaboration
Kalmar Castle has partnered with the Mediterranean Museum for this exhibition. Sofia Häggman, an Egyptologist and author of the book “Mummies – Facts, Research, Fiction”, will provide expert knowledge during the exhibition period and will also give a public lecture in the spring.
