Tournaments Return to Kalmar Castle: A Medieval Spectacle in September
Medieval enthusiasts and history lovers, mark your calendars! The beloved tournament events at Kalmar Castle are making a spectacular comeback this September.
Event Details
From September 12-14, visitors will have the incredible opportunity to step back in time and witness the thrilling world of medieval knights and tournaments. The event will feature the renowned Torneamentum, Sweden’s oldest and most respected knight society.
Historical Significance
Tournaments originated during the medieval period as a way for knights to train and showcase their extraordinary horseback and lance-fighting skills. Interestingly, tournament events were also held at Kalmar Castle during the Vasa royal era in the 16th century.
What to Expect
The Torneamentum knight society, which has been performing at Medieval Week on Gotland since 1986, will present four extraordinary shows during the event, including two spectacular fire shows.
“We are excited to welcome them back! Last year’s event was highly appreciated, with all shows selling out. Kalmar Castle is the perfect venue for experiencing tournaments – and it’s actually part of the castle’s own history. It is said that tournaments were held here as far back as Magnus Ladulås’s wedding in 1276, and we know that both Gustav Vasa and Erik XIV were enthusiastic about tournaments,” says Johanna Algotsson, event manager at Kalmar Castle.
